Self-doubt is one of those things that pops up a lot amongst developing athletes and honestly the reason for the doubt is going to be unique to each individual. That being said, doubt itself is really just a mental action that they are taking because of either how they feel in that moment or how they are afraid of feeling if they were to fail. As a parent, this can be a really challenging thing to see and it can be a helpless feeling at times because obviously you believe in them and you just want them to have that same belief in themselves.
